Under MLS's single-entity structure, teams retain the majority of their gate revenue from home matches, but a portion goes to the league centrally. The exact split between team and league is governed by the participation agreements between team owners and MLS.
This differs from some other North American sports leagues that have more extensive revenue-sharing of gate receipts (for example, the NFL shares a significant portion of gate revenue among all teams). In MLS, teams with larger stadiums and higher ticket prices benefit from greater gate revenue retention, which can create financial disparities between clubs. However, the centralized sharing of broadcasting revenue, sponsorship money, and expansion fees helps offset these differences.
