The MLS SuperDraft is an annual player selection process where MLS teams choose eligible players, primarily from NCAA college soccer programs. Teams draft in reverse order of the previous season's standings, with the worst-performing teams selecting first to promote competitive balance.
Historically, the SuperDraft was a primary source of talent for MLS teams, producing stars like Clint Dempsey, Jozy Altidore, and numerous other national team players. However, its importance has diminished significantly as MLS academies and international signings have become the primary paths to MLS rosters. Many top prospects now sign Homegrown Player contracts with their local MLS academy rather than going through college soccer. The draft still exists but is less consequential than in earlier MLS eras.
