The Designated Player rule, colloquially known as the Beckham Rule, was created in 2007 to allow the LA Galaxy to sign David Beckham from Real Madrid. The rule changed MLS forever by enabling clubs to sign world-class talent while maintaining the salary cap for roster balance.
