Playoff and cup matches tied after 90 minutes proceed to two 15-minute extra time periods. An additional substitution is allowed. If still tied, a penalty shootout decides the result.
MLS previously used a unique shootout format in its early years (one-on-one breakaways) but has since adopted the standard FIFA penalty format.
