When an MLS team releases a player by placing them on waivers, other teams have the opportunity to claim that player. Claims are processed in reverse order of the current standings, giving the worst-performing teams first priority.
If a player clears waivers without being claimed, they become a free agent and can sign with any team (MLS or otherwise). The waiver system provides a mechanism for player movement while giving struggling teams a slight advantage in acquiring talent.
