The MLS Competition Committee is responsible for overseeing all aspects of on-field competition. This includes setting competition rules, determining the format for the regular season and playoffs, managing the schedule, and handling disciplinary matters that arise during matches.
The committee works with the Professional Referee Organization (PRO) on officiating standards and VAR protocols. It also reviews and adjusts rules as needed, such as the adoption of the 5-substitution rule and format changes to the playoff structure. The committee consists of league officials and may consult with club representatives on significant rule changes.
